Forever Hold His Peace: The Crofton Chronicles: Book Three by Rebecca Cohen

Rebecca Cohen is back today with the third installment of The Crofton Chronicles: Forever Hold His Peace available from Dreamspinner Press.

Sebastian Hewel has never been happier. But his life playing the role of his twin sister Bronwyn, the wife of Anthony Redbourn, Earl of Crofton, is about to change. Rumors abound that Bronwyn is using witchcraft to enthrall her husband, and false evidence has been found. Practicing witchcraft is a crime that could have Bronwyn brought in for questioning by the sheriff, and that would reveal Sebastian and Anthony’s secret.

Together they must decide whether it is time to lay Bronwyn to rest. Anthony intends to ensure that whoever implicated Bronwyn pays for the treacherous deed. Whatever happens, Sebastian and Anthony must prepare to face an unknown future together.

What advice do you have for new authors?

I actually still think of myself as a relatively new writer, but if there is one thing I say to any who asks for advice on how to get published it is this: FINISH THE FIRST DRAFT! I’ve lost count of the number of writers I know who never finish writing what they started. Their ideas are amazing, they write wonderfully, but without a complete story they’re not going to get any further. I’m a firm believer in getting the first draft down, and then I play, edit, slash at the monster until I get what I call my official first draft, ready to be seen by more pairs of eyes. I would also recommend learning to love editing. This is where you craft and sculpt your flabby beast into a toned masterpiece. Embrace your inner editor, learn the grammar rules and apply them. Yes, if you get published you’ll be assigned an editor, but you’ve got to get to that point, and if you’re not presenting your very best work then there are hundreds, thousands, of others out there who are and will catch the eye of the submissions editor. Then finally, I’d say don’t give up. It took seven years from initial conception to publication of my first novel. For 99.9% of us, getting out of the slush pile takes time and hard work, but it is worth it in the end. And when you do land your first publishing contract, remember you’ve got to do it all again for the next one! Good luck!

Excerpt:

“So what did the sheriff want?” asked Sebastian once they were in private.

Bronwyn sat down, panting slightly, and pulled at her bodice. “Do you really wear this thing so tight every day?”

“I’ll call for Miriam, and she can loosen the bodice a little. There’s no need for it to be so tight when there are no guests—but once they arrive, it’ll have to be retied.”

Bronwyn groaned. “It wasn’t this bad last time I visited.”

“Childbirth does change a woman’s body,” said Anthony, a comment that received a very dark look from Bronwyn.

Sebastian thought it best to intervene, and quickly. “What was going on outside?”

“Parson is being an idiot. Someone in the village said they had seen Bronwyn buying a number of special herbs and plants last week.”

“Anthony, we can’t just overlook something like that—not after everything else,” said Sebastian.

“Everything else?” asked Bronwyn. “Sebastian, are you in trouble?”

Anthony and Sebastian exchanged glances and Anthony nodded. “I found a mandrake fixed under Anthony’s desk.”

“Who wants Lady Crofton hanged for being a witch?” she asked bluntly.
