1. Where did you get the idea for your book?
Usually I have an idea, a story rolling around in my head. Something I think would be relevant and interesting. Once i have decided to go with it, I start with the ending, where I want the book to go, the emotions I want to illicit. I find it easier to write when I know where I am heading, the purpose and the meaning of what I want to portray. 

 
2. What's the most challenging and most rewarding parts of being an author?
I'm a people person, I love interacting with others, discussing just about any topic. The most rewarding part of being an author is getting to talk with the readers. The most difficult part of being a writer is getting your works out in the public eye, I despise promoting. 

3. Are you a plotter or a pantser and how do you get your ideas down on paper?
I'm a bit of both, I have a defined ending, but I tend to improvise along the way. Sometimes it is better to go where the characters lead you

4. Are your characters based on real people or are they entirely fictional?
The characters are pure fiction in most respects. Some of their traits, their wants and desires are based on the things we all seek, love, acceptance, a sense of fitting in.

“I’m Trevor,” he said smiling broadly, stretching out his hand.

“Hi, I’m Cody,” I said shaking his hand.

He held my hand longer than I was used to and I gazed at the rings on his fingers and the bracelets on his wrists.

“How did you know what I was drinking?”

“I noticed you as soon as you walked in,” he said, seductively, smiling.

“Noticed me?”

“Yeah, I’ve never seen you before. You must be new.”

“Oh,” I half smiled back, “I’ve never been here before. It’s my first time.”

“Thought so,” he continued, in between swigging on his beer and checking me out.

“Huh?” I replied, leaning closer towards him, unable to hear him above the music.

“C’mon,” he shouted above the blaring disco music as he grabbed the beer bottles off of the bar, “follow me.”

He led me around the dance floor, to the back of the club where it was less noisy.

“Here,” he said sitting down, closely, next to me at a table, “This is better.”

“It is, I can hear you now.” I agreed.

“You’re really cute,” he started, “but you look really young. How old are you?”

“Just turned twenty one,” I stated proudly.

“Sweet,” he said grinning deviously, “but you look younger...”

“I get that a lot…” I replied.

“It’s cool, I’m twenty three. Not too old for you is it?”

“No idea yet,” I replied nervously.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Yeah,” I replied.

“Have you done anything yet?”

“Done anything?”

“Yeah, you known, been with another guy?”

“Oh, no. Not yet.”

“Hot. But you want to?”

“I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately.”

“Guess that’s why you’re here,” he chuckled.

“Yeah, I suppose so, I’m curious…”

“How about you?” I asked.

“Me?” he said proudly, “I’ve been out awhile. Can’t ya tell?”

I could actually. He had an air of confidence about him, secure in knowing who he was, not caring about what anyone else thought. He had long blonde hair and stunning blue eyes. He was almost androgynous looking. I couldn’t help but not look at him as I had followed him from the bar, gazing at his lean and slender body.

Blake's mother didn’t live on a busy street, but being summer, the kids were out in full force. The occasional shout or burst of laughter broke the monotonous silence. And then there were the comings and goings of a certain new neighbor whom Blake had absolutely no interest in watching, even if he found his gaze frequently straying in that direction. He’d caught glimpses of the moving truck over the weekend, along with a dark blue Prius, which made him snort. No doubt the driver of a hybrid would hate his gas-guzzling Ford F-150. For some reason, it seemed fitting. He could picture the old Cas growing up into the tree-hugging, granola type.

Idly, he let himself wonder what the adult Cas might be like. When they’d first met as teenagers, the kid had reminded Blake of a scrappy little Irish chimney sweep, minus the accent. The pale skin, the freckles, that mop of messy dark hair. Put him in a newsboy cap and some wool trousers, and he could’ve been an extra in Oliver Twist. Blake had constantly ragged on him about it too. That is, until the following year, when postpuberty Cas showed up. Gone was the scrawny, gangly limbed half-pint from the previous summer. In his place stood a boy with the lithe, wiry body of a distance runner and a face like something out of a goddamn Botticelli painting. Only his smartass mouth had stopped Blake from falling to his knees in worship—though it certainly hadn’t prevented a wet dream or three.

Blake couldn’t lie. His mother’s mentions of Castor had made him curious despite himself. But he didn’t intend on giving in to her badgering about going over there. What the hell would he even say? Welcome to the neighborhood? Here’s a fruit basket. Let’s be friends? He could only imagine Cas slamming the door in his face in response. Blake chuckled and shook his head. Not going to happen. Not in a million years. No matter how much his mother pestered him.

Blog Tour: Most Beautiful Words by Raine O'Tierney

I had the remarkable opportunity to read this book ahead of its release, and I am supremely happy I didn’t have to wait. I can’t say enough good things.

This is the type of story that melts itself right into your heart and stays there. It is one of the most beautiful stories I’ve ever read. The characters were so vivid, and so realistic, I felt like I knew them. The way Raine draws them is so skillful.

There were so many things to love about this book, but one of the first things that struck me was how unique it is. It’s not the same formulaic novel you’re used to reading over and over again. It’s unpredictable, which can be a feat in romance novels. I honestly couldn’t put it down, wondering how the story was going to end. At the beginning, I wanted it to end one way, and then halfway through the book I found myself wishing for the opposite outcome.

The story is told in three different parts, which all connect and intermingle together to form this intricate and beautifully heartbreaking story. It is told primarily from Autumn’s point of view, and this little girl has sass. She’s innocent and opinionated and endearing. The story wouldn’t have been nearly as good without her. She drives the story forward and lets us see the world through her eyes.

I don’t want to say too much for fear of giving away the story, but this is definitely not one you are going to want to miss.

What are the two best and two worst things about being an m/m author?

Two of the best things about being an M/M author are… Being paid (in real monies that can be spent on real platters of sushi!) for doing what I absolutely love and would be doing even if I weren’t being paid real monies! And the second thing? Getting to wear kickass hats. Wait, don’t all M/M authors wear kickass hats?

Worst things? “Shoulds” and cattiness. Sometimes, well-meaning, or not, people will tell you what an M/M romance “should” look like. What plots will and will not work, how characters should be, even who should be writing in the genre. It’s difficult to tune it out sometimes. And cattiness? I don’t think this is exclusive to M/M or even to being an author, but is instead true for ANY creative pursuit. Some people want to tear others down, thinking it will make them feel better about their own work.



What are your most extreme, pie in the sky, crazy out there writing goals?

1) Sell well enough to have an audiobook made!

2) Pay off my student loans with writing money!

3) Win the Newbery Medal! (Probably not with any of my M/M romances…)

Tell us five random things about yourself we don’t know.

• I have no sense of smell, but I make up for it with a bit of synesthesia…My numbers have colors. My phone number growing up was yellow, orange, and red, my best friend’s was pink and blue.

• I married my husband right out of high school (and no, it wasn’t a shotgun wedding!) I honestly thought I’d get some wedding china if we got married… 12 years later, no china.

• When I die, I want to be made into a diamond http://www.lifegem.com/

• I can close my nostrils without touching them. Yes, it’s weird looking. Yes, I’m sort of like a strange reptile woman.

• I’ve lived through a tornado. As in: tornado hit the apartment complex while I was cowering the closet, whoosh, all the heavy play equipment and trees are now gone, there goes the car! type living through a tornado. Totally petrified of tornadoes.



What do you want to be when you grow up?

CONTENTED!

You are famous for being everyone’s biggest cheerleader (a most deserved title). Your positivity and optimism oozes through the internet and infects everyone it comes in contact with. How do you do it?

*BLUSH* I… Okay, seriously, I’m blushing.

I guess it’s really stupid corny to say, but I was taught that everyone has a story to tell and everyone has something special about them (even the most contrary and difficult people). I really, really enjoy encouraging people and helping them see how awesome they are because we ALL need to be reminded of this sometimes..

I’ve also been through (and continue to go through) some really dark depressive times, so when I find things to help me through the storm, I like to share that lifejacket with others!

Bonus Question: what kinds of dachshunds are the BEST kind of dachshunds?

The best kinds of dachshunds are the ones that roam around in a pack at Christmastime! This pack is composed of doxies from all the different families that get together and you can expect to see miniature shorthaired reds, and great big fat black and tans, little dapple longhairs, a wirehair or two, and a Heinz 57 that probably has dachshund in it, but definitely isn’t all the way… These dogs will run from room to room, hardly stopping to lick faces, before heading to the kitchen to see what’s for breakfast. There will, of course, also be a playpen of puppies, too small to run with the pack.

But Rook had no interest in waiting for permission. He’d come forward, snaking his arms around Toren’s sheet-covered waist and pulling him hard against his body. “It’s just a kiss,” Rook breathed before he put his lips against Toren’s. Should he protest? Had he protested? Toren couldn’t remember. In that moment there was nothing but Rook’s firm lips, gently teasing his own apart. Toren kissed back, tasting the other man, sucking at his bottom lip. Rook’s mouth was intoxicating, and quite suddenly, Toren forgot why he’d ever resisted. He liked kissing Rook. But after only an appetizer’s worth of his mouth, Rook pulled away. The sensation of their mouths pressed together lingered, and Toren was dumb with the moment. Lost on it. Uncertain what they’d even been talking about.
“Do you remember me now?” Rook asked.
“Mmn,” Toren agreed, warmth lingering on his lips. “Rook.”
Silence was his reply. The arms around his waist fell away, leaving him feeling cold.
Toren slowly opened his eyes to find he was standing alone, clutching his sheet, as Rook walked away from him toward the staircase.

“Jazz, take pictures!” Eric pokes me hard in the side with his bony elbow.

I wince and raise the camera, clicking a shot.

“Go to the front, like they’re doing.” He points at the photographers running to the front and clicking madly on their cameras.

Heaving a sigh, I drag my ass off the chair to walk forward. I rake my hand through my hair before I glance back at the monstrosity on the platform. Never in a million years would I have thought I’d be in this position. Suddenly oil paint and new guitar strings don’t seem all that important. I just wanna get out, but Eric needs these pictures for the magazine and I’d rather die than let one of my friends down.

My heart thuds when I see Dean looking right back at me as I approach. His brow furrows as if he’s trying to place me. Typical. Of course he wouldn’t remember me. Why would he? My heart hammers a fast beat as my body breaks out in sweat. The inside of my throat thickens, stopping half of the oxygen from reaching my lungs. And still, I’m having the hardest time looking away.

Am I nervous under his green-eyed gaze? Or is it just the hate? It’s been years since I last saw him.

Not wanting to give the wrong impression of an adoring fan, I narrow my eyes and spew out all the venom I feel for this man into one, hateful glare, just before I raise the camera and snap my shots.

"So what I'm saying is, think about what you’re asking me to risk. If you really love me, ask yourself if are you willing to risk what will happen to me if you can't keep your promise."

He knew how unfair he'd been, but self-preservation had been a skill he'd honed over the past fifteen years. He needed Thomas to know just how serious the repercussion could be for his actions.

"Orin, I . . . I . . . how . . .?" Their faces were inches apart, and Thomas moved in for another kiss.

This felt different than the first—less urgent, but no less intense. Orin trembled at the leap he was about to take. When they stepped back, Thomas rubbed his thumb across Orin's cheek.

"I do love you, Orin. More than I can say. So much, that I'm not willing to risk what will happen if I fail you again. I don't have that right."

Thomas's lips quivered and the tears welled at the bottom of his eyes. He kissed Orin's forehead gently.

"Good-bye, Orin. Please be happy." Without looking back, Thomas walked to the front door, opened it, and walked away.

Excerpt: Jerry returned his attention to the tableau unfolding in the aisle. Flynn was making his way casually toward Jerry; he yawned, taking his time. 15-A hesitated; Jerry could see that he had stepped into the aisle, but was thinking of sitting back down again. Just then, the door to the toilet opened and the toddler came out into the aisle. Picking up on the air of tension, the child immediately started to wail.

15-A snapped like a wire stretched beyond its tensile strength. Whipping off his sunglasses, he reached into the pocket of his hoodie and pulled out a glass vial. Holding it up high over his head for everyone to see, he shouted, “Everybody stay where you are!”

People glanced up and turned around in their seats, startled and immediately alarmed. 15-A looked around sharply, making sure that no one was trying to rush him. Several people had started halfway up out of their seats to see what was going on; Jerry knew they were remembering United Flight 93.

15-a moved his hand in a broad semi-circle so that everyone could see the vial tucked in his palm. “I have Sarin!” he announced. “If anyone moves, I break the vial. Someone make that child shut up!”

“You won’t be eating it. Tommy will. He canceled a class to come here. Did he tell you? He was taking a theater class at the community college back in Minnesota. Had to withdraw to be here. And with college, you know that means giving up any money paid. Not that money matters much to you guys. Though as young as you all are, I hope you’re well invested.”

Bas shrugged at him and began taking things out of the bags. Flour, eggs, sugar—both white and brown—food coloring, butter, vanilla, and lemons.

“I didn’t know,” Dane said quietly. He’d thought Tommy would be the least affected by his problems. Of course he’d been wrong about that too. Couldn’t he do anything right? “I don’t know anything about cooking.”

“That’s okay. I got this recipe online. It’s pretty easy. We’re making unicorn poop cookies.”

“What?”

“They are sugar cookies with food coloring in them to make them all rainbow-like. Unicorns are good luck and all that. Supposed to be the embodiment of goodness and purity.” Bas picked up his tablet, tapped the screen, and flipped it so Dane could see. The cookies really did look like a big pile of rainbow poop.

“Looks tasty,” Dane grumbled.

“We shall see, right? Think you can measure for me?” He pulled out a couple of cookie sheets and turned on one of the many ovens. “I got permission to use the kitchen here, but we can’t get too rowdy or they’ll kick me out.” He winked at Dane. “I’m pretty sure the orderlies outside are to make sure I’m not burning the place down.”

Dane got up and moved around the counter to stare at the list of ingredients. Bas plugged in a big mixer and took the mixing bowl out of it, bringing it to the counter for them to fill.

“This is really for Tommy?”

“Sure. We can send some to Ru and Adam too if you’d like. I heard they are only an hour or so away.”

“I don’t want Ru to know I’m here,” Dane said immediately. He didn’t need to mess up anyone else’s life.

“No worries. We need tell them nothing other than that they are from you.”
